Program Overview

Why is it important to have a freshman mentoring program? A comprehensive high school freshmen orientation program provides a proactive and positive introduction to high school for students and their parents. Read this article for more details.

What’s an MKOM? MKOM stands for Miller Kick-Off Mentor. Six junior and senior mentors will be picked for each Academic Lab. A ratio of 1 mentor for every 5 students is our goal.

How do you become an MKOM? Current NHS sophomores and juniors may apply in the spring semester to become MKOMs. Applications are available at the call-out meeting in April and in the Guidance Office. Students should listen to announcements and check this website for details. Part of the application includes a signed Code of Conduct form that must be turned in by every MKOM when they apply. Those students selected are trained in May to become MKOMs for the following year.

What’s the selection process for MKOMs? Our Freshman Campus AL teachers are able to select their own mentors from our list of applicants. After reviewing the applications, our teachers gather on selection night and select their 6 mentors from the pool of about 400 applicants.

What’s the Miller Kick-Off? The Miller Kick-Off is the Friday before school starts. It is designed to help freshmen build a connection with the school, their mentors, and their AL teacher, so they will feel comfortable and confident on the 1st day of school.

What’s an MKOM Connection? MKOM Connections are set times when we bring all MKOMs together with all freshmen during AL. There will be four or five MKOM Connections, along with one social connection.

Are there other times the MKOMs meet with the Freshmen? That’s up to the AL teachers and their MKOMs.

Are there other perks to being an MKOM? Yes, if MKOMs fulfill their duties as mentors, they will attend an end-of-the-year celebration, and they may also request a letter of recommendation for colleges and scholarships from one of the MKOM Coordinators. But, of course, the greastest perk is making NHS a more inviting and exciting school for our freshman students.

What’s the MKOM Council? The MKOM Council is made up of student leaders who work to plan the Miller Kick-Off and the Connection Sessions throughout the school year. The leadership group is open to seniors only who served as MKOMs during their junior year and wish to take on more of a leadership role in the program during their senior year.

2008-09 MKOM Council

Students interested in applying for the 2009-10 MKOM Council will need to fill out a Council Application in March 2009 and the MKOM Council Code of Conduct Form.
