Program Overview

Why is it important to have a freshman mentoring program? A comprehensive high school freshmen orientation program provides a proactive and positive introduction to high school for students and their parents. Read this article for more details.

What’s an MKOM? MKOM stands for Miller Kick-Off Mentor. A team of 5-6 upperclass mentors will work with each classroom of students at the Miller Kick Off.

How do you become an MKOM? Current NHS sophomores and juniors may apply in the spring semester to become MKOMs. Applications are available at the call-out meeting in March and in the Guidance Office. Students should listen to announcements and check this website for details. Part of the application includes a signed Code of Conduct form that must be turned in by every MKOM when they apply. Those students selected are trained in April to become MKOMs for the Miller Kick-Off in August.

What’s the selection process for MKOMs? A committee of Freshman Campus teachers review the applications and select the mentors from our pool of about 400 applicants.

What’s the Miller Kick-Off? The Miller Kick-Off is a week or two before school starts in August. It is designed to help freshmen build a connection with the school, their mentors, and teachers, so they will feel comfortable and confident on the 1st day of school.

Are there other perks to being an MKOM? Yes, they get a t-shirt. If MKOMs fulfill their duties as mentors, they may request a letter of recommendation for colleges, but of course, the greastest perk is making NHS a more inviting and exciting school for our freshman students.

What’s the MKOM Council? The MKOM Council is made up of student leaders who work to plan the Miller Kick-Off. The leadership group is open to juniors and seniors only who served as MKOMs during the previous year and wish to take on more of a leadership role in the program.

2009-10 MKOM Council

Students interested in applying for the 2010-11 MKOM Council will need to fill out a Council Application in March 2010 and the MKOM Council Code of Conduct Form.
